Through volunteering, students can expand their networks by connecting with community leaders, nonprofit organizations, and peers who share similar interests. It also allows students to explore potential career paths, gain practical experience, and demonstrate a commitment to civic engagement. Most importantly, volunteering empowers students to contribute to causes they care about, from education and health to sustainability and social justice, making a real difference in the lives of others while enriching their own college experience.

Below you will find information about community benefit organizations that are currently seeking volunteers. While this list includes a diverse array of service opportunities, there are hundreds of additional organizations in our area, around the state and across the nation that are in need of assistance from dedicated, skilled volunteers like you. Additional sources of information on service opportunities include Serve Fresno, HandsOn Central California, California Volunteers , Just Serve and Volunteer Match.

As you prepare to investigate and select a community service opportunity, consider:

  • Your personal goals and any applicable course requirements?
  • Do you prefer a virtual, in-person, or hybrid service experience?
  • What community issue(s) do you care about?
  • Are there individual or group availability/scheduling limitations?

When researching and speaking with community organizations:

  • Visit their website to learn more about the agency mission and services.
  • Ask about potential volunteer opportunities, including suggesting ideas or projects related to your course goals or personal interests/skills.
  • What requirements, orientation, and training are expected of students?
  • What is the application process?
  • Is there a specific schedule you will need to follow?
  • Who would be your primary site supervisor/point of contact?
  • Be clear about your class requirements, individual goals, and availability.

Follow the 5 Ps by being:

  • Prompt: Start researching and contacting sites right away. Dont procrastinate.
  • Prepared: Have a clear plan for introducing yourself, including who you are, why you are contacting the agency, and what questions you have for them.
  • Patient: Agencies are often understaffed and overworked, so they may not be able to return your call or email as quickly as you think they should.
  • Persistent: Even though you need to be patient, you can follow up on your own if you dont hear back from the agency a day or two after your initial message.
  • Polite: Always be polite! Let them know you realize they are busy, but that you are very interested in talking to them about serving at their agency.
